When a user accesses a folder or file stored on your server over the network, a session is opened for that user. Each folder or file accessed during a session can be monitored and managed separately.

With Share and Storage Management, you can determine which network users are currently accessing folders or files on your server, and disconnect a user if necessary. You can also close specific folders or files that are being accessed by a network user, without closing other files accessed by that same user.

Caution

Users may lose data if they are disconnected without warning. When possible, notify users before disconnecting them, or before closing a folder or file.

Membership in Administrators, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete these procedures. Review details about using the appropriate accounts and group memberships at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83477.
